“Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit?
to be out of your sight?
If I climb to the sky, you’re there!
If I go to the underground, you’re there!”
Psalm 139:7-8 MSG //
Earlier in this Psalm it talks about being an open book to God; that in the stories of our lives – he has left no page unturned. He sees the good I know about me, but he sees what I dislike about me. I find him knowing my story tremendously comforting; it makes me feel like I can loosen my grip on this ‘i’ve got it together’ – at least just a little. Its not just the fact that he sees, but how he sees that changes things. In his seeing he calls me to be loved, because he knows that it’s love, not being shamed, is what changes things.
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matt 11:28-30 MSG //
I think I want to trust when I’m weary more, to stand in his rhythms of grace and have faith in that more. I think it’s trusting his love, not our shame, that holds the power to change the path of a story – away from the dark towards the light.
