I was on my morning run and I gave this beautiful old lady wearing a brightly multicolored polar fleece who was pulling one of those trundler bags behind her, a little fright as I ran past.
So I stopped; I’m not sure why I did. But I told her I loved the colours on her jumper. And she said ‘oh it’s terrific isn’t it? I don’t know why you’d wear anything BUT colour!’
She then took her glasses off, looked me in the eyes and said ‘be careful with those earphones because you can’t hear bad people coming behind you…… ‘
‘Yeah you’re right, I do need to be careful!’ I say.
She smiles, pops her glasses back on and says “Oh and before I walk off can I leave you with a terrible joke?’
‘Yes!’ I say
‘What happened to the knight who slayed the fiery dragon?’
‘He got fired’
And we laughed and then parted ways.
People are full of such surprises, should we choose to connect for a minute or two. She seemed so comfortable in her skin.
There’s something neat about people who aren’t ashamed of their bright colours. Because those colours are what world needs to see, they’re colours the world wouldn’t otherwise know; those colours you have …are quite lovely.
Don’t tuck them away, let them be seen.
